<--- "6-Pack Saturday Night"

32 by 32 inches, pastel

Original at the Phoenix Art Museum

The idea for this scene came because of a party that was being held at a line camp on the Four Sixes near Guthrie, Texas. One of the cowboys from the neighboring Pitchfork Ranch got himself all duded up and rode over to take part in the welcoming.

"I spoke with some older cowboys who said when they were young they would occasionally go courting horseback. This is common in ranch country."

Limited edition, signed and numbered prints are available.

"Calf Buster" --->

40 by 30 inches, pastel and charcoal

Privately owned

"Calf busting, or wrestling calves to the ground so they can be branded, cut, and doctored, is strenuous work. My model for this painting was Buster McLaury, a young hand who grew up on the Four Sixes, and later became foreman on the great Goodnight Ranch as a very young man, just 30 or so."

Calf Buster was shown in the Cowboy Artists of America exhibit in 1983 and was awarded the gold medal in the drawing category.

Limited edition, signed and numbered prints are available.

<--- "Sharing An Apple"

24 by 30 inches, oil

Original on display at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

"I had heard from other cowboys that Sheep Morrow treated horses better than anybody else on the ranch. I tried to come up with something that would portray his kindness and the way he treated animals.

"He didn't think the horse would eat the apple, but he posed anyway. Sheep was pretty surprised when the horse took the apple. He liked the painting though, and I still hear from him"

Signed reproduction prints are available.

"Monday Morning Blues" --->

40 by 30 inches, pastel and charcoal

Privately owned.

<--- "Split Decision"

Privately owned.

"This painting developed when I saw cowboys pushing some cows and calves into a corral.  One of the calves cut back, and, with an instantaneous reaction, one of the hands threw a quick loop down to his left side and heeled the calf promptly.  A humorous touch for this picture was added."

Signed reproduction prints are available.

"Patching His Saddle" --->

Owned by the Quarter Horse Journal Museum.

"This young cowboy was planning to get married and didn't want to go to town with the rest of the guys, so he stayed back at the ranch and kept himself busy, patching his saddle. Pretty good way to stay out of trouble with a marriage coming up soon."

This painting was used in advertising for Marlboro cigarettes.

<---"Stitched Hat"

16 by 12 inches, oil

Privately owned.

"On a roundup, I noticed a young hand wearing a hat with mended holes on the brim and crown. I reflected back to when rawhide lacing and hand-stitched brims were commonplace in the Southwest."

The young man featured here is Buster McLaury, also seen in "Calf Buster" above.
